Fraternity Involvement and Leadership
During his tenure at Cornell, Rocco became an integral member of the Chi Psi Fraternity, which he considered his home away from home. His engagement in fraternity life was profound, and he quickly ascended to leadership positions such as Risk Manager and Academic Chair. These roles were foundational, providing him with initial leadership experiences that shaped his approach to more prominent governance roles within the university.
Leadership on a Broader Scale
Rocco’s leadership extended significantly when he was elected VP of Membership and Alumni Development for the Cornell Interfraternity Council (IFC) Executive Board. In this capacity, he oversaw fraternity relations and alumni interactions for 28 different fraternities. His tenure in this role was marked by the development and implementation of a robust Hazing Prevention Training program, which he spearheaded to foster safer fraternity practices.
Proactive Safety Initiatives
Following a critical incident of a drug overdose within the fraternity community, Rocco was quick to coordinate a response that involved setting up Narcan Training for fraternity members. This initiative eventually influenced university-wide health and safety policies.
Navigating Challenges with Foresight and Determination
The late 2022 brought significant challenges when allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced within the IFC. Rocco’s swift action included convening an emergency meeting that led to a temporary halt of all fraternity social activities. He played a pivotal role in drafting and refining a comprehensive Sexual Violence Prevention plan, which structured interventions around three main pillars: Environmental, Empowerment, and Educational, significantly shaping fraternity life towards a safer future.
Financial Leadership within the Student Assembly
Beyond his fraternity commitments, Rocco served as the Vice President of Finance for the Cornell Student Assembly, where he managed critical financial deliberations, particularly the Student Activity Fee adjustments. During his tenure, the fee structure was significantly revised to accommodate the financial strains caused by inflation, enhancing support for campus organizations.
Contributions to National Fraternity Policies
Rocco’s influence reached national levels as he served on the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) Advisory Council. His role here involved shaping national fraternity policies and creating resources that benefitted fraternity communities across various universities.
Professional Exposure through Internships
Simultaneously, Rocco pursued professional growth through internships at prominent companies like Giovanni Foods, Mondelēz International, and Restaurant Brands International. These experiences allowed him to practically apply his academic knowledge, particularly in quality control, ingredient technology, and operational strategies within the food industry.
Recognition and Honorary Distinctions
His leadership and academic prowess were recognized through his selection into the Order of Omega Honor Society and the Der Hexenkreis Senior Honor Society. Additionally, his contributions were acknowledged through awards like 1st Place in the 2023 Northeast Greek Leadership Association Order of Omega Case Competition.
